Forum: GratefulDead Subject: favorite jam moments

I was thinking about how sometimes the magic of the dead can be glimpsed in extremely short passages, sometimes only a few seconds. I have a few of these moments in the dead's music that will always have a huge impact on me:

5/2/70 good lovin, when the rest of the band drops out and lets jerry solo for a good 30-40 seconds (accompanied by a drummer)

10/31/71 dark star, when jerry pulls out the first chords of tighten up; a whole world breaks open and beautiful music pours out of the whole band

7/27/73, the famous watkins glen jam, when keith starts playing jazzy altered chords after about 4-5 minutes of space and the band locks in

7/17/76 comes a time exit jam, when the whole band converges on a particularly salient two-chord jam which finally morphs into an infectious 11-count rhythm (you can feel the band's excitement when this happens - phil and mickey/billy are the ones who start it, and the rest of them stop to listen for a moment)

I could probably generate more but those are the peaks. Anyone have any more short moments that are really special for them?

I like the St Stephen > NFA transition here:

http://www.archive.org/details/gd70-05-06.sbd.gans.94.sbefail.shnf

About 3:50 into St Stephen the band go early into NFA but Garcia starts riffing St Steve over the top of it pulling them back for the last verse they 'appear' to have forgotten. I can never quite make up my mind if it was a screw up or if they meant it all along, but it's one of my favourite moments.

i liked the transition of the orange marmalade from my knife to my rye toast this morning. it almost went in a different direction (i.e. the floor), but the knife held it together and segued beautifully to the bread.

You can make marmalade from any citrus fruit. So you can have lime, grapefruit and lemon as well as orange, or any combination of these.

it is uselss to argue with that UK Buffoon ;)

of course WE know that there is only one kind of marmalade. I mean really - another type of fruit would have to have some nerve attempting to call itself a marmalade. Orange is the KING!! any other flavor of (ahem) marmalade would simply just be another flavor of jam.

(no wonder we kicked their asses in the Revolutionary War. While our troops were enjoying the energizing and refreshing effects of the TRUE marmalade, they were just getting their fingers sticky in jars of jam)

Meyer Lemon Marmalade is spectacular. Try it with another flavor of coffee. Branch-out JOTS! French Roast. That's so.....uh, my mom circa 1978.

Eh. What do we really expect from our seal-clubbing, igloo dwelling, Russia seeing forum brother? (I'm joking here Micah. JOTS can't really see Russia. His igloo has no windows.)

Awesome hijack Dire. Keep up the good work.

But then my favorite moment popped in to my head. Listen to the entire Spanish Jam -> U.S. Blues because the whole thing is sublime.

Exactly what I was thinking, but the jam is so long I wasn't sure it qualified as a "moment"! The whole Dark Star - Spanish Jam - US Blues is wonderful, and the transition to US Blues is both surprising and subtle. I listened to that show the other day on a very long train ride, and it sure made the time go by nicely.

there's another good "moment" from 5 days later (6/28) during the post-WRS jam. It's like halfway through, maybe a little more toward the end, when jerry plays a couple jazzy minor chords which starts the band off for a few minutes. I think that's my favorite musical chunk of that epic 30-minute monster jam.

Well, since you may not have been around to read me blather on about it, and since it will surprise and shock Rob and Dire to hear me say it (read me write it?), by far my fav jam sequence is the entire 6 min OOne on 12-29-68. Nothing, IMHO, beats the intensity and odd noises so perfectly suited to that firestorm of a tune. Not that its CREAM, but you get the idea.

You and me both it seems! It can be tricky sometimes getting the tone right. You can't guarantee that the way it sounds in your head is going to be the way it sounds in someone else's, alas. All I meant was that we're in the Grateful Dead forum and this place has a long and noble history of smartassedness, banality, tomfoolery, drastically off-topic hijacking, deviation, repetition, WTFery, and just every now and then something of passing interest concerning the Grateful Dead. Got to take it for what it is or not at all.

I cannot figure why some people find this forum intimidating. It was once a bit more wild-west. Dire and Tito(it's still not about fuckin' rainbows and unicorns people.) and TT and Loogy and Smi2les.....those were some wild(er) times.

Now, I'd say this place is rather tame and the inmates are quite well behaved. Much like a GD audience. OK, maybe not the 9/19/70 audience. "Go fuck somebody!!"??

Remember when Liam died?

Remember when Dire was trapped with a broken leg like Jimmy Stewart and LMA was his Rear Window?

On the other side of the coin you'll find grace and compassion:

Remember all the admissions of dubious behavior which have been confessed here. Remember that each has been met with care and understanding.

Remember all the healing vibes sent to those who were ill, addicted or who lost a loved one.

I guess it's a slice of life. You take the good, you take the bad, you take them all and there you have.....The Facts of Life! OK, now I need a cheese-squeegee.

Irony, Mr Flow, just irony.

Yes, we've had our share of moments around here haven't we? I don't think this is an intimidating place so long as you recognise you're inevitably going to get called out about something at some point and you have to learn to suck it up and spit it out. But you're right, no matter how much snarking goes on we do have a tendency to gather round the flag when a brother (or sister) goes down. I do remember the good things. I don't think I'm the only person for whom Dire, unwittingly, unintentionally, was the focus of the forum experience. For a long time he, and William Tell, by and large made this place. The times they are a-changing...

I don't think I could nail down a particular time when Dire and I (or indeed you and I) locked in as it were. But I'd say that looking back over the early posts we were perhaps a little tentative and took some time to establish our forum 'voices'. Some supremely confident (or foolish) posters go steaming right in, engines on full ahead and cannon primed.

For my part of it, I was impressed from day one; your writing skills, in fact, intimidated the crap out of me, and I wished dearly for a sp checking system (easily!) at hand, as well as more time to refine my posts. I only wish the efforts had actually had some recognizable influence on my subsequent posts.

But, at the same time, and to keep this from becoming too much of a Tell All Love Fest (har), I think that the two of us experienced, to a greater extent than in hindsight it seems we should have, a handful of "misunderstandings/miscommunications" that by shear force of will (I guess we both thought the other worth the effort, eh?) we overcame, and as I now often say, realized we generally were only refining our own take on any number of issues via the attack/counterattacks...that we were largely in agreement in spite of our words getting in the way (mine anyhow--those damn abbrev's and writing before thinking), and through that back and forth, we skipped the honeymoon phase (stop it Dire!) and went right to the comfortable old couple, if that metaphor isn't too disturbing to consider with your afternoon glass of wine (mayhaps?).

these are excellent days for the forum. those who think things are rough now have no idea what things were like before (and i blame myself for A LOT of THAT crap - lol)

things are running pretty smoothly and there are some very cool very good "newer" people here - case in point: Micah (he seems like a real good guy - one that would be a cool person to hang out with in "real" life)

- others too - my apologies for leaving out some of the other good new peeps :)

Now, if we could only see Earl and Ashes Rising once in while.

And you know, D--the two of us going back and forth just might make every think I am going for "ten thousand" just to beat you to it. Not to mention it suggests a trend toward repeating the past, which of course, all good PM's--ah, all good historians are so quick to point out!

Yep, he does post there...what bothers me about it (I do post there once a week or so) is that he'll post some interesting post, multiple paragraphs, and get NO responses...maybe a "nice job" by Bill (userunk), but there just isn't the back and forth that folks like me (and BE methinks) enjoy...daresay "require"? I think that having "moved on from here" (in the spirit of HFlow's accounting, I fear), he is too hard headed to return. We became fairly "close" over there, but haven't interacted in a few months...

No! Very sorry for the confusion. Liam's wife's illness was a true tragedy.

A few years ago, after being put through the old LMA ringer, Liam started a thread under an alternate screen-name. The thread was entitled "Liam Finnegan is Dead". It was a hoax. A joke.

I apologize if others were confused by my post. I would never joke about such matters as Liam's wife.

Yes it was indeed tragic about his wife I felt so horrible.

Funny thing - I remember way before when he was going through a rough time and lashing out at Dire a bunch and flipped me crap a few times. And you know how it is around here someone picks on one of us we all circle the wagons, start a feeding frenzy, etc. In fact unfortunatly this is one of the reasons Ian left I think.

well through all that Liam came back and then when that personally tragedy happened to him we circled the wagons and embraced him because as stupid and corny as it sounds we are like one big dysfunctional family around here

Yes, it's a funny old family this one. It can be tough making the breakthrough but once you're in you're in. You start to get to know people and you start to let them get to know you. You'll likely never meet, never even hear a voice, but you start to care about these people. Damned if I know how that works. But it does.

I've noticed that the people who take the wise-cracking and grandstanding personally, tend to be the same people who become alienated within the forum. Then, they often do the lash-out-flame-out-dance and disappear in to the ether. And we never really know what their motives were.

This group ALWAYS gives rope to new posters. No bullies just because you're new here. But the regulars here don't pull punches either. It's sink or swim. Swim with just a smidgen of social grace. It's easy to make friends here.

So tight-knit, yes. But always welcoming the wandering deadhead who wishes to, dare I say, jam? Ooops. Wrong thread.

Well, I for one had it both ways...said I was tired of posting so much, made for a retirement speech, got to relieve myself of over-doing it, and then promptly (largely) just started doing it all over again, sans conversations I used to feel compelled to participate in for some unknown reason.

As Rob said, I sorta, kinda feel I woke up and acted like a grown up ("my way") whereas I used to feel somewhat "responsible" (though not exactly sure for what...Dire's drool? CLIFF's cranky fish comments?).

Does email count? I think it should...you talk about everyone else at the Forum (well, okay...not you, but youre just a tad too nice, er, boring), and thus, it's the same, I think as face to face or phone at least, right?

So, using that metric, I have contacted: 14. Hmmm, given my paranoia/privacy issues, that's a lot more that know my email that I would've ever guessed. Recall when Dire called me a "sally" for not posted my pic? I never should've let him get away with that...

My view is they are totally offbase...due to the situation at the time, THEY didn't join the Warriors, for crying out loud...Magic joined the LAKERS and thus, instant trophy.

This could stand for countless moments in the band's history, the sweet, ethereal transition from the Wheel>Wharf Rat ( and then to the "Playing" reprise ). This sense of unhurried beauty , is sadly missing from most of the shows as time went on , though the moments did still happen, ( kept us coming back ), it was not as common of an occurrence .

see earlier posts in this thread for plenty more examples of boneheadedness (much of it from me)

don't worry, you're not alone.

Hey MC
I know , people will be shocked . The second of the three Dark Star movements is something to hear . The band catches the Big Wave .

MC, I wholeheartedly agree with you on the Comes A Time 7-17-76. There are many to mention, but one that has always grabbed me - and taken me away from whatever I was doing or thinking at the time - is the 6-29-76 jam between the last verse of The Wheel and the actual wind up reprise of Playin'. That whole jam is tight and full of little surprises. Especially near the end when it all gets chillingly sparse and airy, with Jerry just caressing some sweet yet poltergeist-like notes out of his guitar and someone unplugs a cord and the subsequent, sudden 'space echo' reverb crackles and someone makes a ghostly vocal sound . . . out of this world!

there's a MILLION of them. We could be here all day. So I'll try and go for something a little more unique or less mentioned

I love the transition into US Blues

Love the transition on 9-27 or 28 ( forget )1972 between Dark Star and Cumberland

if you're talking full blown out jams like I said we could definitely be here all day and I might end up getting fired

To me, the china cat>i know you rider from rockin' the rhein is some of the tightest, most beautiful playing I've heard. Could definitely listen to this each day

You have to hear this one, great jamming from everybody especially between songs. I highly suggest Rockin' the Rhein if you don't have it. THE best Tennessee Jed also, sweet marmalade!

From the post-lyrics jam in UJB, through the flow of space (and time) into and out of and back into the PITB theme, emptying out into the Reprise and back into the UJB Coda, spilling effortlessly into the opening notes of Dew:
